BIO: Associate Professor Ivan Bertoncello completed his PhD in Ray Bradley’s Laboratory in the Physiology Department at the University of Melbourne in 1976 on the clonogenic analysis of haemopoietic progenitor cells. Following postdoctoral appointments as a Lady Latham Fellow at the Royal Children’s Hospital Research Foundation (Melbourne), and an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow in the Department of Clinical Physiology, University of Ulm (Germany) he returned to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute to take up a Peter Crimmins Research Fellowship researching gonadal tumour stem cells.

His international profile in adult stem cell biology was built on pioneering work in experimental haematology devising and employing powerful cell separative strategies and cytotoxic perturbation models to analyse the hierarchical organisation and regulation of haemopoietic stem and progenitor cells. In the early 2000’s he developed an interest in lung regeneration and repair directing research utilising similar strategies to analyse the organisation and regulation of regenerative cells in the adult lung, understand how they are compromised in chronic lung disease; and how they can be harnessed to repair the lung.

He was appointed as a senior scientist and head of the Adult Lung Stem Cell Laboratory at the Australian Stem Cell Centre in 2005. In 2010 he moved to the University of Melbourne as head of the Lung Regeneration Laboratory. He is currently an Honorary Principle Fellow in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and a Co-director of the Lung Health Research Centre at the University of Melbourne. He has published 119 papers, invited reviews and book chapters on stem cell isolation, characterization and assay.
